No, it's not necessary, as you know. But it can save wear and tear on the transmission. Ironically, especially the synchro rings. By rev matching to near the correct engine speed manually, they have less work to do. It also makes down shifts smoother, and easier on the clutch. Listen to most bikes slowing down, you'll notice they blip the throttle on down changes. It's exactly the same technique, and especially helps rear wheel drive vehicles, which lock the driven wheels easier on down shifts as there is a lot less weight over them . It doesn't have to be done at breakneck speed, and it wasn't here either. I drive on track a fair bit so keep the speeding for there.

This is my car. No lack of forward planning, I was practicing heel and toe downshifts. ;) Below the speed limit and all under control, and stopped for the lights in plenty of time. Nothing illegal, nothing dangerous, nothing behind me.
PS; Your car looks to be slightly over the central line in your photo, probably better to keep an eye on where you're going rather than what everyone else is doing.
