ESP has been in use for a few years but mandatory on all new cars after 2014.

White van man has no doubt capitalised on this. Some will just take even bigger chances and be an even bigger menace on the road. There's still a brain 'behind the wheel', calling the shots. Not that I am suggesting I want artificial intelligence to drive people around all day..because that kind of technology has been shown to have serious flaws and the more you disengage the brain the worse it makes cognitive function.

Yes, the vehicle can 'take over' but that won't stop you speeding and taking other risks. The system doesn't intuitively know you're being a prick on a public road about to run a cyclist over; it merely reacts as best it can afterwards..
