Not saying you were in the wrong necessarily, OP, but maybe that wasn't the best place to be doing a U-turn when there's someone behind you? It's not enough to make decisions on the road based on what other drivers should do, but rather what they may do if they're an idiot who isn't planning ahead. If you just assume that everyone else is a competent driver, that's when you run into problems!
