Put CM into context. Its usually held once a month, whereas almost every other day of the year it's literally a critical mass of vehicles. And there are over 30 million of them on our roads. Have you seen the average speed of cars in cities, London included? Do you realise that almost all the congestion is caused by them? Do you realise anyone old enough to cycle and pay tax is actually paying a disproportionate amount of tax for roads, based on the inconsequential damage they cause?

Now, a procession (not actually a protest), is fine. But the problem is it's open to anyone. So with all such gatherings you are bound to get hoodlums who are only there to cause trouble..you'd see the same at many large rock, pop or rap venues.. you know the sort. Easy to spot but difficult to police. Said element aren't cyclists or even commuters, they're just people on bikes looking for trouble. And the more they do it, the more ignorant and dangerous the ignorant motorist will become, the more the roads will be that less safer for it. The biggest culprits here is the government. They are the one's who force so many people into such a small space. They are the one's who don't plan proper infrastructure. They are the one's who are only too happy to profit from selling petrol to people, than to offer then clear, relatively safe and altogether sensible transport alternatives. Driving is shit. Public transport is shit. Cycling is shit. Even walking can be shit and it's all because we are nothing more than useful idiots. So everyone get together and direct your disgust at the ultimate authority responsible for this chaotic mess. Britain's cycle infrastructure is so way behind other countries and the less of a shit our so-called elected leaders give, the more congested, expensive and altogether dangerous our roads become. Out the EU. Out with the corruption. In with putting our interests first. We can do this.

I think this also sets a dangerous precedent with regards to idiots thinking they can run people over and then try to claim victim status.

'“During this a police vehicle was targeted by demonstrators. As it tried to drive away, the vehicle ran over a cycle that was left in the road as an obstruction.'

. How was the vehicle allegedly targeted?
. Many are saying the cycle wasn't deliberately obstructing the car; that cyclist actually saw the car HIT someone and since it wasn't going to stop, attempted a citizen's arrest of sorts for want of a better word. The car clearly hit someone before that bike was on the floor, knocking them back.
. Even if it were an obstruction, what right does that officer have to run it over? There could have easily been someone on the floor. What right does the officer have to run the red light? Why didn't the officer put the flashers on?
. Was backup called by the officer..an ambulance? It's clear they fled - what specific threat were they under aside from choosing - through their OWN free will - to drive into a protesting group?

I get the feeling this won't end here. If it were a mob attacking a car (like those apes in the LA riots) then the gloves are off.. fuck 'em - did you see what that mob did to people? It's shocking. I'd have put a bullet through their brains. BUT this sure didn't look like anything of the sort.. a protesting group yes, and no doubt often withing such groups you do get (in my experience), a rogue element that doesn't really care for cyclists or the police and just wants anarchy. But come on.. why go to such lengths to excuse this officer's actions? I'd reeeeallly like to see any footage of the claimed 'grab' prior to this event - perhaps it holds some key information?

Also, please don't try to turn this into an anti-cyclist rant because all that does is cloud the issue. You could just as easily find drivers who run lights, abuse verbally and physically, and kill people and then say this represents the majority. Which is of course not true and the same applies here. Please try to put things in perspective and focus on what is shown.

'This is the extraordinary moment a police car collided with a cyclist, drove over a bike and then sped off after tensions flared during a mass bike ride in central London.

The police 4x4 hit the cyclist – causing him to stumble backwards and drop his bike – and then crushed a second bike under its wheels before racing off on Friday night.

Witnesses described the incident at the junction of Vauxhall Bridge Road and Millbank as a “hit and run” as they slammed the officers’ actions.

Scotland Yard said police were trying to drive away in their BMW X5 after being “targeted by demonstrators”. They drove over the bike after it had been deliberately left in the road as an obstruction, a spokesman said.

The incident took place just after 9pm during the monthly Critical Mass bike ride, which sees hundreds of cyclists take to the streets for a group ride through London.

One observer who filmed the confrontation said it was “completely unacceptable”.

IT consultant John, 25, who did not want to give his last name, told the Standard: “I can imagine the police line is that they felt threatened, but frankly they’re armed police officers – do a bunch of cyclists pose a threat to them?

“Was it necessary to run over this kid’s bike? The police were trying to push people out of their way with the car.

“I think it’s entirely fair to call it a hit and run. The police were involved in an accident, they completely crushed a bike, and then they ran away.”

John said cyclists were remonstrating with the officers in the car after they had earlier “collared” a cyclist and treated him roughly.

Witnesses said they “wrestled” him off his moving bike and then dragged him across the road.

“They collared this one guy very forcefully,” said John.

“I started filming as the level of force the officers used was disproportionate.

“I don’t know why they collared this guy, but it looked like they wanted to make an example of them to the rest of the group.”

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “At approximately 9.10pm on April 29, police became aware of a demonstration involving a number of cyclists at Vauxhall Bridge.

“During this a police vehicle was targeted by demonstrators. As it tried to drive away, the vehicle ran over a cycle that was left in the road as an obstruction.

“No one was injured.”'

Look at their methods: what they type, when they type it. It's the same pattern over and over. I reckon it's a moronic minority who only come here to cause trouble and because they live very shallow lives. Hell if the site only allows comments via Facebook or some other form of registration I'm all for it..sooner these twats are gone the better in my opinion.

I agree. Iv'e seen such a thing on countless reports here. The more popular the report the more they try to ruin it. Even posts that post nothing but non-partisan information are being instantly met with down-votes and in some cases outright abuse. As far as I'm concerned the people do it not because they have anything to contribute but because, for whatever reason, they want to silence others. Whoever is behind these attacks you're wasting your time and ultimately my guess is the admins will just boot you out (they can do that, just so you know). To all time-wasters: most of us are more interested in what happens than your petty little squabbles. Grow up.

"','s" MO: Comes on here stalking commentators and generally being a pedantic little prick thinking he/she can raise a few eye-brows and thus bring attention towards their person. In reality however all this does is show them for what they are: a stupid, arrogant little troll who periodically climbs up from their bridge in order to prove their worth. Fails miserably. Notice how, on this occasion, "," again latches onto something said but a) doesn't say why they disagree, and b) has no actual opinion on why murdering people in cars is wrong. Oh, but you thought you'd back up and suddenly pretend you're not here for trolling? You fail. Oh, but you thought you could copy other people's names? Again, you fail. Like all pathetic little trolls..you fail. You're just too busy rolling in your own shit to have the mental capacity to understand it.. and you call OTHERS immature? Time-wasting fuck-wit.

I'm all for ensuring the law is followed by every road user.

But with these critical mass publicity stunts in most cases it's just another form of anarchy and if I was driving a vehicle and surrounded by thugs I would take evasive action to protect myself.

So if a gang of you want to threaten me or my family then I will do all that I need to protect them.

This comment in no way condones the actions of the police as they have at their hands additional resources to assist them (unlike me).

But if you want to gang up and act anarchic the expect the consequences.
