In situations like this I would advise staying behind the next vehicle. It is tricky, and sometimes you can filter, but it appears you were in the driver's blind spot as they proceeded to move. Many drivers don't check their mirrors and don't account for cyclists filtering. The road was also narrow and he could have veered left at any time. All the best.
