This needs to be debated in Parliament I think. using Section 50 powers, it appears (some) police forces are trying to create a loop-hole in the law in an attempt to infringe upon people's right to film a public space. Basically if they get complaints of alarm and distress (including their own staff apparently) then they can demand your details and insinuate your are or are about to be guilty of a public order offense. Whether any forces have done this I honestly don't know. Hopefully the following video will explain things a lot better than I can..
Post corrected (finally). Going to replace this hunk of junk as soon as I decide what to buy. Perhaps if someone knows why some computers don't copy and paste like they should, that might help in the meantime. Thanks a lot.
An apparent attempt to conflate a right to film with the crime of public disorder. The public need to know about what's going on here, in my opinion, and Parliament should debate the issue and amend laws in favor of upholding what is an extremely important right.
If that debate weighs in the favor of the wannabe gestapo? Then I suggest that everyone who doesn't like being filmed in public by CCTV make the same complaint of "feeling alarmed and distressed".
As mentioned in this country we have laws protecting the right to film in public and for good reason. We have police statements clarifying this point. The LAST thing we need is little Hitler's trampling on those rights because I can tell you this.. if they get their way then this country will quickly turn into something the likes of Hitler could only dream of.
Yes, I do think the person filming was being somewhat standoffish; however that is not the point and that is not a point in law. The copper was bang out of line here, in my opinion, and needs an education about the limits of his assumed authority. Please don't piss on our freedoms, officer, and also remember who you work for.
Whether or not I agree with the approach of the person filming, I find this officer's apparent understanding of the law regarding filming in a public place to be absolutely dire. No crime was committed or intended by filming that building. Don't go filming private property? Dude, whatever station you're at..I think you REALLY need to be spoken to about this because your head appears to be in the clouds and unwilling to accept you are wrong. I doubt very much a judge would take kindly to your behaviour irrespective of your interpretations of the law..
It is my understanding a formal complaint has been filed regarding this officer's attitude.
