A lot of these problems stem from the sometimes ambiguous nature of the Highway Code. There is no actual legal requirement to give 1.0 or 1.5 metres. None. The only thing a driver can be done for is careless and/or dangerous driving. So as you might imagine with a lot of people anything goes.
Cycling is so dangerous where I live that I am giving up cycling on roads for good, on account of the sheer number of people who seem to view cyclists as targets rather than equals. A lot of accidents occur at junctions including roundabouts, accidents that could be entirely avoided had the cyclist been afforded requisite space. But again, this is a recommendation and has no legal basis beyond contributory factors towards an infraction of careless, dangerous or reckless driving. Worse, and to put it bluntly, most police forces in this country don't give a shit.
Then there's the equally moronic, often violent minority of cyclists who think being anti-social is a right. This country has an outdated attitude to cycling and it won't change in our generation.
