Or you could have just moved to the middle lane, let him past, and resumed your overtake. Space to do so, would have left you in a safer position? These issues are normally caused by 2 people, not one.

Did you not notice the lorry in the middle lane braking ?
Why should driver in outer lane move over behind a lorry that's already braking ?
The drivers behind in the other two lanes had seen the hazard ahead, why didn't this Driver ?
... because he couldn't see the traffic beyond the vehicle he was "tailgating" as he was too close to see past
That's why he suddenly panicked when he ended up behind a lorry that was braking, and pulled out again too close to avoid hitting the vehicle he'd just "undertaken"
