Not an awful lot else he could have done here - other option would have been to find two spaces, one in front of the other, which would have still resulted in him taking two spaces.
Looks like a quiet evening, and even in your photo, there are plenty of other spaces.

I don't see what else the driver could have done in all honesty, maybe hand the back of the van out of a space and be a hazard - I would suggest if posting things like this then it's good practice to make a recommendation on what you would have done, and how you would have parked.
Otherwise it's just a silly post for the sake of posting something.
