Amber means be prepared to stop, however it's probably much safer to carry on than slam on the brakes, causing the car behind to also slam on.

Actually Simon, you'll find the light was on amber when the solid line was passed! If both lanes can turn left, then the VW should know and attempt to merge across, rather than cut across!

You should have been fully aware on traffic coming from the right to turn left. Espececially as you jumped the lights!
