Drove his car at the side of my bike while I was stopping at red lights. His excuse was that I was not using the cycle lane on the pavement.

Use of cycle lanes and shared use facilities isn't mandatory. His 'excuse' is no excuse.

Why do they do it (not at drivers)? Well, I think part of the answer lies in the ambiguity of the law creating a 'loophole' of sorts. By this I mean, there is NO specific rule for close passing. None. All that can happen is such driving can be considered a contributory factor for named offences such as driving without due care and attention. You also need witnesses and CCTV if you intend to go through the courts.

The police.. they seldom get involved unless for PR. So as you may gather, the field is wide open for this type of dangerous abuse on our roads. And I see it myself whenever I'm on two wheels instead of 4: close passing; intimidation; threats.. you name it. Using a car as a weapon is common because the people responsible know they can get away with it.

Will technology help resolve this issue? I doubt it; it's going to take more than this including a change of attitude. It's going to need newer, more clearer and more specific laws.

Footnote: I'm not saying all cyclists are saints, either. There's no them and us (cars vs bikes) as far as I'm concerned; literally anyone can be a prick on the road however statistically the person behind the wheel of car will be the biggest one likely to kill. In the meantime, other countries in Europe often laugh at our laws and attitude here in the UK, because we are so far behind in terms of infrastructure, attitudes and law. All you can really do is keep the camera rolling just like lots of car drivers do, as a potential deterrent and insurance policy in the event of a collision or other incident. Too many shits on the roads I'm afraid..

You know it's bad when the same car already has an entry on here too.
(Does piss me off though when people do that to me when I'm cycling)

I'd be inclined to call the police ref: potential drunk driver seen driving dangerously and without due care and attention.

This driver is a proper clown. Hogging the outside lane and not letting us overtake. He then kept slamming his brakes on wanting us to crash into the back of him/her. Hope you proud of your driving and by the way we had a 5yr old in the car. Prick..
