A MAN involved in a New Year's Day accident on the Black Isle has died in hospital.
Police confirmed this afternoon that George Jack, who was 36, died from injuries sustained after being struck by a car at Station Road in Avoch in the early hours of January 1.
Mr Jack, who was local to the area, was hit by a Ford Fiesta in the early hours of New Year's Day. It is understood he was on his way home from a Hogmanay celebration in the village.
The accident happened at around 5am.
Mr Jack was first taken to Raigmore before being transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
The road was closed for several hours following the accident.
In a statement released through police this afternoon, his family said: "We are understandably devastated by our loss. We would ask that our privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."
It's understood Mr Jack was a well-known character locally who served as an office bearer with Avoch Amenities Association.
Inquiries are still ongoing in relation to the incident and anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.

I think there wouldn't be as much anger directed towards the driver if his history of driving about the town was better. Not only were there comments on here about him driving like a twat but plenty of folk have witnessed him being an arse. Now he has hit and killed someone people will look at his past driving history and automatically jump to conclusions rightly or wrongly, that's just life and I dare say if he had a squeaky clean reputation and driving history no one would be so fussed about him, he has made a rod for his own back.

Absolute idiot of a driver. On a small back road near Kirkhill he was driving so fast he drifted over to the wrong side of the road and was very close to losing control. This was at 8.15am and I was forced to slam on my brakes so that I was not hit head on. There was a woman out running on the pavement beside the road and had the idiot driver lost control there is no doubt she would have been hit by his car.
Several other people have witnessed similar dangerous driving from him and the authorities have been informed and are involved now so hopefully they stop him before an innocent person is hurt.
