You must also report it to the police, even if you think it will go nowhere. You have to take the moral high ground in situations like this - do NOT give people like this an inch.
Anyone comes up to me like that and out of fear and panic I step back and tell them in no uncertain terms to keep out of my space. If they get closer? Last warning. Any more and their face is my primary target. Remember: they are approaching you not the other way round, and you are in a position where you cannot escape so the law is on YOUR side.
