'Driver leads police on dangerous 100mph chase on M6'

'This is the moment a driver led police on a dangerous 100mph motorway chase through the Midlands

Curtis Stewart was spotted weaving around other vehicles as he fled officers on the M6 at junction five.

Police tried to box Stewart in, but he drove onto a grass verge before reversing onto the main carriageway of the M6, which was unlit in that area.

He then made off from officers, as he reached speeds in excess of 100mph in the Transit van at around 4am on August 15.

He left the motorway at junction three, travelling through two sets of red lights at 70mph in a 30mph zone.

Stewart eventually stalled the van and was arrested.

He was found to be one-and-a-half times the drink-drive limit.

In June, Stewart, aged 26, of Coventry, went the wrong way around a roundabout in a Transit van and hit another vehicle. He stopped to apologise and then left the scene.

This week he admitted two charges of dangerous driving and was jailed for 23 months at Warwick Crown Court.

Pc Mitch Darby, from the Central Motorway Police Group, was one of the officers involved in the pursuit.

He said: “His driving was shocking. He was first spotted by a police dog unit in Birmingham doing over 70mph and going through red lights, and that was without a police car behind him.

“He drove up an embankment before temporarily reversing down the M6 and just missed a stinger when he exited the motorway. He then drove the wrong way over a blind humpback bridge.

“It was his appalling driving which ultimately stopped him when he was boxed in after slowing for a corner. It was lucky he didn't have an accident.” '

I agree, all they tend to get is a slap on the wrist. No wonder where I live the roads are insane, what with the sheer number of idiots like him basically doing what they want. They know they can get away with it in most of cases and in a minority of cases where they are convicted, they know they'll be wrapped up in cotton wool. Is it really any wonder they end up taking lives? When there is practically no deterrent?

23 months

23 months

He'll serve less that 12 in a comfy warm bed being fed and have all the luxuries including his human rights, sky tv etc

How is that a deterrent?

He deserves 5 years minimum - it's about time this country started giving proper sentencing/punishment and protecting the innocent rather than considering the impact on the perp. They chose to commit an offence.

Proven to be unfit to over the drink-drive limit whilst running at least two sets of red lights at 70mph in a 30mph zone.

Scum like this are killing people on our roads - if he hit you at that speed you'd most likely die, especially if you were on foot or on two wheels. And all he gets is a slap on the wrist..
