Did you get the name of the company?
Cycle lane use is not compulsory, so even if there was one you are free to choose - and without prejudice from small-minded people. If their excuse for passing too close is that you were not riding in a (non-existent) cycle lane then they need to find another profession - ideally before they get the opportunity to kill someone.

Concrete mixer lorry deliberately intimidated me whilst riding my bike around York northern ring road. Unexpectedly sounded horn while overtaking at close quarters. Driver leant out of window at roundabout to shout at me and accuse me of not riding in the cycle lane (there wasn't one) and that I would be liable if there was an accident.
