Sounds like a nasty piece of work. Shame you didn't have a camera to record the encounter.
I always find smoking a spliff while driving chills me out but doesn't sound like it works for this guy (maybe he hadn't put enough in haha).

This moron passed us at speed within inches as we cycled a quiet road in Sussex on Friday 12th August. The road was wide enough for two cars, he accelerated as he came up behind us. We waved and shouted at him and he actually stopped. He claimed we were in the middle of the road (we were not, we were on the left in single file). We asked him why he was so angry and he started ranting about driving that road (Grouse Road, near Colgate) every day and there always being cyclists on it getting in his way. He looked dangerous, if either of us had been on our own I think he would have got out of the car. When we noticed the smell of weed and asked if he was smoking a spliff he said he was, waved it at us and said it "hardly had any in it". I suggested he wait with us while we called the police to discuss the matter further at which point he raced off. He is a danger to society.
White, mid twenties, tattoos on his arm and shoulder, longish blondish hair swept back and to one side. Had a 'beard' that looked more like a small unkempt copse of fluff.
He has been reported to the police, if anyone else has a similar experience please report him too so he can be dealt with.
