In my opinion you're far safer taking primary position along this stretch of road. It makes you more visible, gives you more room and goes some way to discouraging dangerous illegal passing.

Brad. Both cyclists have a lawful right to be on the road. They are traffic.

Hey, do you brits have a law on child endangerment? That boy's pop should be charged for the way he his forcing his kid to cycle in a dangerous environment to close to traffic. Could even be a felony. Just sayin.

@ 03:36:15 You say "The cycle lane isn't the "cyclist's" lane"
Rule 140 Cycle lanes: These are shown by road markings and signs.

So, what is the difference between cyclist's lane and cycle lane? Nobody here suggested he was not in his lane so I don't get what you are on about.

You say "Don't blame all this on bad road design" - look at this view of the same location. There is barely room for the cycle icon to fit. You cannot say this is acceptable design, that encourages cyclists to sit in this lane that is not an adequate width, and gives drivers the impression that the adjacent lane is fit for purpose to accommodate a vehicle while passing a cyclist.

The Highway Code itself doesn't mention a distance, only that you should give plenty of room (along with a photo to illustrate the point); European guidelines specify 1.5m (1m inside a city). It's a good idea.

We did Cycling Proficiency at that age and the young lad is doing pretty well (to be fair, probably better than most on our course).

Motly anti cycling brigade below this

Yes the young lad maybe should have shoulder checked but his dad was behind him and taking control

Re the van at the beginning - I'm guessing either the van waved them both on or the van driver didn't read the road markings

Re cycle lane and without going into the ins and outs of whether it has to be used - it was still a close pass - the Highway Code states 1.5m (that's 5ft or the width of a car)

So if you anti bike brigade can get past the small details and just stick to the main dangerous part of the video

FE58 FUJ - you are a danger to other road users and you need educating - maybe 3 months riding a bike yourself will teach you

correction: and *almost* gets squashed by the bus turning.

^ Unfortunately it's not just road design that needs to be improved he he

I think that at the beginning of the video, the cyclist should have ceded priority to the van. Please correct me if you feel this is wrong.

At 00:20 the young cyclist doesn't shoulder-check before passing the stationary vehicle. Always be wary of drivers (or cyclists, motorcyclists) trying to get around you at this point; it's a common problem. Especially hybrid vehicles that may be very hard to hear.

At 00:30 the cam cyclist approaches a mini-roundabout with traffic (bus) already negotiating said roundabout. However the cyclist doesn't stop and always gets squashed by the bus turning. Perhaps they did this in order to try and shield the young cyclist? I don't know, but it was dicey.

At 00:59 We see what I can only describe as a DEPLORABLE cycling facility; namely, a cycle lane that is very narrow sharing a somewhat narrow lane. Collectively this is a recipe for danger, as it practically invites close passing by giving everyone in this video a false sense of security. Technically, passing cyclists in this lane is illegal unless requisite space is afforded (which would most likely mean entering the oncoming lane).

To their credit the van driver wasn't speeding, weaving, although the pass was close. They also passed on a bend. They should have been further out.

As shown when the cyclists wait to use the crossing, all drivers quickly and safely stop..which goes to show that most road users are fine. Why don't we all get together as one, and hold our planners to account? You cannot design infrastructure in this manner and expect it to be safe, it is completely unacceptable.

All of this is just my view. Cheers.

What do you mean by "Squirrely little kid"? Is your remark meant to be disparaging? Abusive.

Next. Don't blame all this on bad road design, it won't wash, and it will not fully excuse the driver's actions. The cycle lane isn't the "cyclist's" lane; there is no legal requirement to be in one. The road is their lane. The road is everyone's lane.

What is the problem? Van was in his lane. Squirrely little kid managed to stay in his lane. If the lanes are not wide enough to accommodate both side by side then that is bad design.
