Cyclists: you NEVER ever want to be riding in the gutter/curb. It's the worst place for you: as you are more exposed to debris; are less visible to others; have less space to avoid a collision and less chance of deterring stupid and dangerous drivers from trying to get past you. You also have a right to use the full lane where appropriate.. look up any respected cycle guide (including the government's own guides), and they'll recommend you do just that. If someone is trying to intimidate you into the gutter then that's their problem. The rule is very simple here: it's THEIR responsibility not to hit you - not your responsibility to avoid getting hit by them. And if it turns to road rage, you do not react unless you are in personal physical danger e.g. assault. You need to remain focused and safe. Always be aware of your surroundings and always use them to make sure you are seen. If the dick behind has a problem with your rights then really, that is their problem not yours.
When you do change position, always try to give clear hand signals so that other people are aware of your intent. Never assume they are aware. You don't have indicators or brake lights, you can swerve easily and your speed is sometimes hard to judge. Try to think ahead and read the road, scan for potential hazards and if something happens just calm down and carry on. God I sound like a boring lecturing old fart but if it saves a life..
Cycle around 1m from the gutter but only where it is safe and practical, aka secondary position. All other times ride central aka primary position. At pinch points and on roads too narrow for vehicles to safely over-take, you need to ride central to deter such attempts. Can you see what I am trying to say? You have a RIGHT as well as OBLIGATION to assert your space. Nobody has a right to use their car as a weapon in an attempt to try and take that space from you.
Notice how the woman just sits there as if she's thinking to herself 'Oh no, he's arguing with other road users again on account of his stupid selfish attitude once he sits his ass behind a ton or more of metal killing machine.' p.s. By the looks of things she can do better than him. He's going to run over someone if he carries on the way he is. IF he's reading this? Read your fucking Highway Code sunshine..do you understand what to do? No? Then do not drive until you do. You stay back and give the person in front plenty of space. You idiot.
Idiotic, selfish, careless and dangerous driver shouldn't be on the road with that attitude, he's a danger to the public. "You're meant to be on the left". No actually YOU are meant to stay back and keep some distance. There is no legal requirement for cyclists to stay left at all times. NONE. The video clearly shows the cyclist filtering and stopping WELL IN ADVANCE of the lights changing.. what you see here is an irate fool of a driver who doesn't want to share the road including giving OTHER ROAD USERS space. Tough. Fuck off the roads before you run someone over. Prat.
Wow Sef, that was very gracious, thanks. I was a semi professional cyclist many years ago so spent days and hours training mostly on country roads, so have an understanding of the problems encountered by cyclists such as the misnomer/urban myth by by some that cycles should keep to the left. How about in this instance when the cyclist intends to turn right, if the cyclist was on the left, he would have to cut across traffic going straight on.
We all like to think we are good drivers but I'me sorry, just because one has a quick car that may be able to outperform others, that doesn't make you a good driver also, why do some drivers always want to be in front of everyone else or tailgate and get angry when they can't no matter how dangerous it is, and to prove what exactly?
Just try to understand this, when you aggressive drivers think you are racing and beating everyone else. The majority are not in the slightest bit interested in your immature cock fight's and let you go by just to get you safely out of their way, but should you come across someone else like you then the battle of the tiny knob road rager's really commences, the best thing is that the rest of us can name and shame the bad drivers on here, have a good laugh at their expense, display outrage and call you names. I just hope insurance companies collect car ownership data from sites like this then use it to financially clobber the culprits come renewal time.
Well said Shamus! We need more people like you, and it's nice to know there are good drivers such as yourself. I sometimes cycle too but I am losing interest on account of the minority of drivers who have no road manners and no road sense. Then there's the state of the roads and the very poor infrastructure. I just don't feel safe or confident enough to ride a bike any more hence that's just one more car on the roads adding to the congestion. Yes it is a minority of people doing it but it's so frustrating and scary.. most of the time it's simple situations like not over-taking through pinch-points and junctions, roundabouts..giving cyclists room etc. All that goes out the window. Many just don't understand what you say with regards to cycles being classed the same as vehicles, or cyclists having the right to use the full width of the lane where appropriate. Hopefully there will be more people like yourself on our roads then it will be better - thank you, Sir, for your understanding. Take care.
So many motorists that are ignorant of the Highway Code.
Gov.UK states-A bicycle is to be classified as a complete or finished vehicle provided it has the essential character of a bicycle.
So a cycle is a vehicle and you are correct in your interpretation of the Highway Codes.
Twat "you should keep to the left" This driver needs re-testing especially on the HC witch seems to be his weakness, apart from attitude of course.
I know Cambridge City well, the cycling capitol of the UK so when I drive around the city I am always mindful and take extra care so as to know where they are and their intended route, not your fault that bicycles are not fitted with indicators or brake lights. By your position on the road he should have known exactly what direction you were intending to go. Normally there is an box area for cyclists only at traffic lights so cycles would normally filter through and be in front of any vehicles at the lights, it seems to be absent at this junction, maybe a complaint/recommendation to the City Council to install one is required.
