What annoys me about incidents like this is, you phone the police and they aren't interested unless there's collision. That's the impression I get. This allows pricks in cars - and on bikes even - to do what they like in the knowledge nothing will happen to them. Is it really any surprise this country has such a bad rap for cycling? is it really any surprise the sales of cams are soaring? I don't think so. There appears to be more than a reluctance to protect and serve..more like an agenda to ignore crime and potential crime in order to milk the figures. Every day I'm on my bike I get people using their car as a weapon and my only recourse aside from saving my own life through my own actions, is to upload it. I'm not a perfect cyclist and nor do I look for trouble, if I make a mistake I put my hands up and say sorry. But 9 times out of 10 it's either a minority of chav pricks on cycles or a majority of pricks in cars that are the problem. I can fully understand why people leave this country if they're lucky enough because it's just so far behind others, and so far up it's own ass-hole. The government lets things like this happen because they do not care, unless they can profit from it. Horrible place.

Unfortunately we now have a perfect storm in this country
The population has increased, in particular that of London over the last ten years.
If you allow a certain percentage of that population will fall into the bully, thug, hooligan or downright ignorant category, the total number must have increased. The total number of vehicles has increased on the roads so those two facts alone means that there will be more drivers falling into the above categories behind the wheel of a car.
At the same time police forces across the country have dramatically reduced their traffic departments, or even done away with them completely. The remaining traffic police are regularly directed towards other non traffic duties. When was the last time you saw a traffic car actually on patrol?
Most enforcement is done via cameras now, great for catching legal registered drivers, but not drunk, careless drivers or unregistered vehicles.
Throw into the mix that with all the cut backs numbers have been reduced across the board.
A lot of police officers find traffic law the hardest area to learn and have no real interest in enforcing it.
Another factor over previous years was down to cutbacks, I know that at least one local police division some years limited the number of weekly prosecutions for traffic offences due to staff cuts.
So illegal drivers were less likely to get stopped, less likely to be prosecuted.
If you are a teenager that an insurance company wants thousands to insure, are you going to pay that if you think it's unlikely that you will be stopped, or if you are, it will only result in a fine of a couple of hundred, why bother?

So in essence we now have the situation with more dangerous/inconsiderate/illegal drivers on the road, fewer police to catch them and even if they do get caught unlikely to get much more than a rap on the knuckles.

Sorry for the ramble but I am just fed up with the whole situation on the roads in this country now.

Also, I wouldn't recommend the hand gesture. The police will most likely treat that as a separate issue and caution you. Furthermore it also allows drivers like this to use it as a form of mitigating circumstance.. trust me, I've seen them do it and subsequently get away with being prosecuted. By all means talk to them - and THANK YOU for caring - just don't give them ammunition.
