You realise how big these cars are when they're brought over here. In the US everything is so much bigger, so what would be two lanes over here is often little or no more than one. As a Brit it can take some getting used to; for instance, if you see a destination and you think sure, I can walk there..but you don't realise the buildings are huge, so it's harder to gauge distance. And they have better turning lanes, in my opinion: instead of stopping to wait for someone to turn left or right they have their own dedicated filter lane. You realise just what a crowded country the UK is when you travel to many other western countries, and how much it's changed in what amounts to so little time. I don't think it's changed for the better to be honest..
That's presuming that the lights were correct....by the number of drivers coming through I would suspect that they had the timings wrong...seen this countless times.
